How to Open Piano Roll in Ableton Live

1. Create or Select a MIDI Track

  • Create a new MIDI track by pressing Ctrl + Shift + T (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + T (Mac).
  • Load any MIDI instrument or drum rack onto the track.

2. Insert a MIDI Clip

  • Double-click in an empty clip slot in Session View to create a new MIDI clip.
  • Alternatively, in Arrangement View, select a time range in the MIDI track and press Ctrl + Shift + M (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + M (Mac) to create a new MIDI clip.

3. Open the Piano Roll

  • Double-click the newly created or existing MIDI clip to open the piano roll in the Clip View at the bottom of the screen.
  • The piano roll will display a grid where you can add and edit MIDI notes.

Click within the grid to add a note. You can drag to adjust the note's length and position. To remove a note, click on it again.
